“Deptford’s my place, my kind of town as Sinatra said”
The object I chose from the Camberwell Collection was the Picture Book Jigsaw, made by Galt Toys in the 1950s. The illustration from the jigsaw is taken from a children’s book written and illustrated by Alice and Martin Provensen. The townscape, with its variety of heights, styles and features reminded me of the High Street where I live in Deptford, and the more I looked into the Provensen’s work the more, in a strange way, it reminded me of Deptford. This short film attempts to encapsulate Deptford High Street with its market, its mish-mash of architecture, its eccentric characters and its strong sense of community, but also its deprivation and uncertain future.
